Public Art
I was approached by Havant Borough Council to propose a mural design to adorn the exterior wall of the recently completed Public Library. The project needed to involve several community youth groups in activities that could contribute to the final design idea. I suggested a photo excursion to capture the architectural patterns of the shopping parade, followed by a series of workshops using Photoshop.
It was during the workshops that the artwork idea for the mural came to me. When showing the photos to the youths that had not participated in the excursion, the discussions turned into a game to guess where that brick pattern, tile, or pavement was in the area. When they had identified the location they proceeded to tell me stories about something that happened there, someone they'd met, or when they were last there. So a simple close up image of wood slats from benches in front of Tesco sparked a story telling session that all the youths wanted to be part of.
The designs for Leigh Park Parade Stories Volumes I & II are created from identifiable patterns and surfaces found in the shopping parade. The spines of the books reflect the stories that could be told about events in the area. The row of books follow the same angle as the roof line and help to make the building's function easily identifiable from a distance.
For the second part of the commission large vinyl banners for use in the Community Centre were designed using the images from the photo excursion and the Photoshop workshops. I arranged the images into a grid pattern similar to the one found throughout the shopping parade and used bright colours to repeat the pattern across the 3 banners.
