Observations on a Town
"...tired buildings are transformed through a riot of excited colour and line....even in the bleak waste of the brutalist 50s architecture, with a town centre still awaiting it's long-promised regeneration, there is energy and buoyancy to Janet's work that brings beauty firmly back into the frame." Jennifer Leach; AN Interface Review, December 2009.
In the autumn of 2006 I obtained studio space in the town of Bracknell, an ageing 'new town' from the 1950's. I spent the next 3 years creating a body of work inspired by my surroundings before the scheduled demolition was to begin. It included 20 drawings, 3 collages, a short video, a floor installation, and a large fresco and digital print panel incorporating reclaimed tiles from the town. The work culminated in my solo exhibition at the Bracknell Gallery marking the end of my residency at South Hill Park Arts Centre, Bracknell. The complete Bracknell Regeneration Series is published as a small full colour book and available to purchase through Blurb.com.
