Observations on a Town
"...tired buildings are transformed through a riot of excited colour and line....even in the bleak waste of Bracknell's brutalist 50s architecture, with its centre still awaiting it's long-promised regeneration, there is energy and buoyancy to Janet's work that brings beauty firmly back into the frame." Jennifer Leach; AN Interface review of 'Observations on a Town', Bracknell Gallery, December 2009.
In the autumn of 2006 I obtained studio space in the town of Bracknell, an ageing 'new town' from the 1950's. I spent the next 3 years developing a body of work inspired by the town before the planned demolition started. The work includes a series of 20 drawings, collages, a short video, a sculptural floor piece, and to mark the end of the series - a large fresco and tiled panel work which gave my solo exhibition at the Bracknell Gallery its title.
